Visas and Entry Requirements for My Trip

All countries require a valid passport (with a minimum 6 months validity) beyond your intended stay. It is your responsibility to have the correct travel documentation. Visa requirements vary significantly depending on your nationality and destination. Please check with your local embassy or consulate for the most up-to-date information, or consult your travel agent.

    Uzbekistan:

    • Please check with the Embassy of Uzbekistan for specific visa requirements based on your nationality.
    • Visa-Free for Some: Citizens of the United States, China, and Vietnam older than 55 years old can travel to Uzbekistan for up to 30 days visa-free.
    • Letter of Invitation (LOI): If an LOI is required for your Uzbekistan visa, please fill out & submit the request form provided by your agent.

    Turkmenistan:

    • All nationalities require a Visa to enter Turkmenistan.
    • Letter of Invitation (LOI): You must apply for an LOI through G Adventures. Once your trip is confirmed, please submit your LOI application no later than 40 days before the start of your tour via the form provided by your agent.
    • Border Visa: As the trip crosses into Turkmenistan overland at the Shavat border, your visa can be obtained there. Our Expedition Leaders will present the LOIs to Immigration officials. You will then pay your Visa Fee and Immigration tax, before having your passport stamped with the Turkmenistan Visa.
    • Important LOI Note: Our Local Office will only contact you prior to travel if your LOI has NOT been approved or if more information is required.
    • New Entry Requirements (as of May 12th, 2023): All travelers will have their temperatures measured and are required to carry out a Covid-19 rapid antigen test. A USD35 per person fee for the test will be paid at the border.

    • Passport Pages: You must have at least two blank passport pages available for each country you will visit for entry & exit stamps.

How Much Spending Money Do I Need for My Trip?

Spending money requirements vary greatly by traveler. Consider your personal habits for drinks, shopping, and tipping.

Currency, Credit Cards, and Exchanging Money

    General Central Asia:

    • Central Asia is primarily a cash operating region.
    • Banknote Restrictions: Only banknotes printed after 1996 can generally be exchanged. Bring notes without marks or stamps.
    • Small Denominations: We recommend bringing about 70 USD in small denominations (1, 5, and 10 USD notes) for convenience.
    • USD/EUR Acceptance: It’s often possible to pay in USD or EUR if local currency isn’t available.
    • Traveler’s Cheques: Not recommended due to bank restrictions and high exchange costs.

    🇺🇿 Uzbekistan:

    • ATMs: Widely available for withdrawing local currency (Uzbek Sums – UZS).
    • Exchange: Banks readily exchange USD or EUR.
    • Cash Advance: Some banks in Tashkent allow USD cash advance, but availability depends on the bank’s cash reserves.

How Much Emergency Money Should I Bring?

Please ensure you have access to at least an additional USD $200 (or equivalent) as an ’emergency’ fund, for unforeseen circumstances (e.g., a natural disaster requiring a route change). This is a rare occurrence.

Should I Be Tipping On My Trip?

Tipping in Central Asia is not customary but is very appreciated and shows satisfaction with the service.

    • Service Providers (Waiters): We recommend 3-5% depending on service quality.
    • Local Guides or Drivers: Recommendations range from $3-$4 USD per person per day, depending on service quality and length. Your Expedition Leader can provide specific advice.
    • National Geographic Expedition Leader: Tipping is appreciated if you felt they did an outstanding job. As a guideline, $4-7 USD per person, per day can be used, though the amount is entirely personal preference.

What Activities Are Optional On This Trip?

    • Samarkand:
      • Konigil Village and Silk Paper Making Workshop
      • Tomb of the Old Testament Prophet Daniel Visit (3USD per person)

    • Khiva:
      • Islam Khoja Minaret
      • Ichan-Qala (Itchan Kala) Visit

Are There Any Health Considerations I Should Know Before Travelling?

    • Inoculations: Please note inoculations may be required. It is your responsibility to consult with your travel doctor for up-to-date medical travel information well before departure.
    • First Aid: We recommend carrying a First Aid kit and hand sanitizers/antibacterial wipes, as well as any personal medical requirements.
    • Remote Areas: Be aware that we sometimes travel in remote areas away from medical facilities. For legal reasons, our leaders are prohibited from administering any type of drug.
    • Local Pharmacies: While pharmacies in Asia tend to stock Western drugs, they are often locally produced. Bring the full drug name (generic and brand) with you if purchasing prescription drugs.
    • Fitness: Carefully read the itinerary and assess your ability to cope with our style of travel. G Adventures reserves the right to exclude any traveler from a trip without refund if, in the reasonable opinion of our Expedition Leader, they are unable to complete the itinerary without undue risk to themselves and/or the rest of the group.
    • Turkmenistan Prohibited Medications: Turkmenistan has strict advisories on prohibited medications. If you require further details, please reach out to our Sales team.
