📋 Meals
Eating is a big part of traveling. With G Adventures, you experience a wide variety of wonderful food available around the world. Meals are generally not included in the trip price when there’s a choice of eating options, giving you flexibility in choosing where, what, and with whom to eat. It also allows more budgeting flexibility, though food is usually affordable.
Our groups often eat together to taste a variety of dishes and enjoy each other’s company, though participation is optional. Your CEO can suggest great restaurants during your trip.
🍽️ Included breakfasts typically consist of Asian-style dishes like noodles or congee (rice porridge) or bread and eggs. Vegetarians can find various options, though availability may vary in some regions.
While trekking in remote regions, food is included, plentiful, and made from fresh, local ingredients.
Indonesian cooking uses fermented shrimp paste (terasi) as a basic ingredient. Many vegetarian options are available, but be specific when ordering food as some dishes may include chicken.
What to Take 🎒
Pack lightly, as you are expected to carry your own luggage. We recommend keeping your bag weight between 10-15 kg (22-30 lbs). Avoid suitcases, and choose a small to medium-sized backpack or rolling bag.
You’ll need a day pack for carrying water, cameras, and other electronics. If your trip involves overnight stays in homestays, villages, or camping, sleeping bags are usually available for rent.
Detailed Trip Notes 🌍
Indonesia is a great tourist destination, with good infrastructure, though not at the same level as developed countries. English is widely spoken. Patience, a sense of humour, and a willingness to engage with local people will enhance your travel experience.
Spending Money 💰
Spending requirements vary for each traveler. Some may spend more on drinks or souvenirs, while others may not. Consider your spending habits for drinks, shopping, and tipping when planning your trip.
Money Exchange 💸
During this tour, you’ll use the Indonesian Rupiah. Debit cards are the best way to carry money, withdrawing cash from ATMs that accept Visa and Mastercard. ATMs are widely available in Southeast Asia. Bring both cards as a backup. Your bank may charge fees for overseas withdrawals.
It’s also advisable to carry some USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, or AUD in cash for emergencies. Carrying only cash is risky, so it’s best to have a mix of ATM cards and cash. Avoid travelers’ cheques due to the high fees and time-consuming exchanges. Credit cards are accepted in some restaurants and stores.
Tipping 💵
In Asia, it’s customary to tip service providers, such as waiters, about 10%, depending on the service. Tipping is expected, though not compulsory, and shows satisfaction with the service. Tips for local guides and drivers range from $1.5-$3.5 USD per person, per day, based on service quality. Your CEO can provide specific guidance.
At the end of the trip, tipping your CEO is appreciated. The amount is personal, but a guideline of $20-25 USD per person, per week, is suggested.
